2.2 Cách thêm đuôi –est vào tính từ ngắn

Để thêm đuôi est vào tính từ các bé cần nắm vững một số quy tắc cơ bản sau:

• Tính từ kết thúc bởi 1 phụ âm, thêm đuôi –est (old – oldest, near – nearest)
• Tính từ kết thúc bởi nguyên âm “e”, chỉ cần thêm đuôi –st. (fine – finest)
• Tính từ kết thúc bởi 1 nguyên âm (a, i, e, o, u) + 1 phụ âm, gấp đôi phụ âm cuối và thêm đuôi –est.(thin - thinnest, fat – fattest, hot – hottest) 
• Tính từ kết thúc bởi “y” dù có 2 âm tiết vẫn là tính từ ngắn, bỏ “y” thêm đuôi -est (happy – happiest, busy – busiest, pretty – prettiest, easy – easiest)
• Một số những tính từ có 2 âm tiết nhưng có tận cùng là “y,le, ow, er” thì áp dụng quy tắc thêm đuôi –est của tính từ ngắn. (simple – simplest, narrow – narrowest, clever – cleverest)
